I recently ran across an article in one of those "advertising supplements" about couples who exercise together which was very interesting. (Here is a link to another article on the same topic.)
The article profiled several couples who instead of growing apart after the kids left the nest, developed a shared passion for a physical activitity (tennis, hiking, biking).
And the piece cited an interesting study.
"Another prime benefit of having a spouse as a workout partner is that you're more likely to stick with your regimen, as [Jack Raglin, a research psychologist and kinesiology professor at Indiana University] discovered in research he conducted in 1995 on the exercisae habits of married couples.
In his twelve month study...Raglin compared 16 married couples who joined and exercise program together to 16 married men and 14 married women who joined without their spouses. After a year, 93% of the couples who enrolled together were still in the program. As for the married people who exercised alone, 43% had dropped out."
According to the participants, the spouses didn't want to let their partner down by stopping the program.
So next time you go to the gym, take your spouse along. It is a great way to keep both your marriage and body in great shape.
